Senator Lou D’Allasandro is among the lawmakers that wants expanded gambling in New Hampshire. Although he has failed in his quest before, D’Allesandro is again renewing his efforts, only this time he may have more lawmakers on his side.
The economy has been a driving force behind casino expansion that has taken place in many states throughout the country. D’Allasandro is betting that the economy has arrived at a point in New Hampshire where opinions of gambling may be altered.
“We’ve never been this desperate,” said D’Allesandro. Other lawmakers agree, with Representative Gene Chandler claiming, “You try to strike when the iron’s hot.” That has been the tactic used by other states.
In Pennsylvania, not only did legislators expand by adding new casinos, but they also legalized table games for these casinos. That will allow Pennsylvania casinos to compete with Atlantic City, New Jersey in the race to become the gambling capital of the Northeast.
Ohio is a state that D’Allesandro can point to in comparison to New Hampshire. In Ohio, voters turned away casino proposals several times in the past decade until finally approving four casinos this past November.
